Manuscript Evaluation

.008/word

A manuscript evaluation is a bit like a light developmental edit. I’ll take a look at the big picture of your story, and see what’s working and what’s not. I’ll give feedback on:

  • Plot and Story Structure

  • Character Development

  • Pacing

  • Tone and Voice

  • World-Building

A manuscript evaluation can be a great choice for an author who doesn’t want or need all the detailed notes of a developmental edit, but rather some general feedback and suggestions for improvement, as well as some guidance and recommendations for the next steps.

Includes:

  • Light comments on the manuscript, particularly to point out examples of the issues discussed in the report

  • A written report (3-6 pages) with feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, and actionable suggestions for improvement

Developmental Editing

.02/word

Developmental editing looks at the big picture of your manuscript, and can help make sure your story is told in the most effective way possible. I’ll take an in-depth look at:

  • Character Development

  • Plot Holes

  • Story Structure

  • World-Building

  • Pacing

  • Tone

  • Character Voice

  • Romance Arcs

  • Themes

  • Choreography in Action and Spice Scenes

This edit is for those who want a lot of feedback and in-depth analysis.

Includes:

  • Feedback as comments throughout the manuscript

  • A developmental report (15+ pages) that includes chapter-by-chapter analysis

.01/word

A copy edit checks your manuscript for consistency, accuracy, and clarity. The suggested changes will include corrections in grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, as well as:

  • Character Details: (eye color, hair color, clothing)

  • Timeline Details: (day of the week, time of year)

  • Light fact-checking: (can your character really get from NY to LA that quickly?)

  • Scene consistency: (Your character has too many hands in this scene!)

I do provide light line editing with my copy editing service. I will offer suggestions to rewrite or rearrange sentences when clarity is affected.

Includes:

  • Edited manuscript, with all changes tracked in Microsoft Word’s Track Changes

  • Another copy of the manuscript, with all changes accepted, for comparison

  • Notes on the manuscript to flag plot and character inconsistencies or provide further explanation

  • A style sheet that details your personal style and the specific style choices made in your manuscript—use this as a tool for any further edits, revisions, or proofreading. It’s also a great reference when writing more books in the same series!

Line Editing

.015/word

A line edit revises your manuscript at the sentence and paragraph level, with a focus on improving flow and style and strengthening prose. I’ll take a close look at:

  • Passive vs. Active Voice

  • Showing vs. Telling

  • Word Choice

  • Awkward or Confusing Phrasing

  • Dialogue and Character Voice

  • Scene Pacing

  • Paragraph and Sentence Length

  • Repetition

It doesn’t include the technical detail of a copy edit, though some grammar and spelling errors might get corrected along the way.

Includes:

  • Edited manuscript, with all changes tracked in Microsoft Word’s Track Changes

  • Another copy of the manuscript, with all changes accepted, for comparison

  • Notes on the manuscript with further suggestions and explanations (this is a note-heavy edit!)

  • A written report (2-3 pages) that goes into more detail about the most common issues found in the manuscript and ways to improve the writing
